Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner this week warned those managing public money against interest-rate "swaps" that he says are "toxic products" and shouldn't involve public funds.
But Mercer County and West Middlesex Area School District have used these complicated financial deals to make or save taxpayers' money, officials from both entities said Thursday.

One-stop shopping for Christmas is a dream come true for holiday buyers as well as those that are looking for a way to avoid the after-Thanksgiving rush.
This year the Murphysboro Hometown Christmas will take place on Dec. 5 and 6, and once again shoppers will have the opportunity to stop by the One-Stop Holiday Shop.

Herrin senior Alex Brown, pictured with Tigers head coach Irv Lukens, signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-9 center averaged 12 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.0 blocks as a junior, when he was named MVP of the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic and helped Herrin win a Class 2A regional championship.
Brown narrowed down his suitors to SIUE, Murray State University and John A. Logan College and ultimately chose the Cougars.

The Greenville College football team finished its regular season last Saturday.
But the Panthers still have one more game to play: the National Christian College Athletic Association Victory Bowl. Hillsboro grad Garrett Young and the rest of the Panthers will play host to Geneva College in the Victory Bowl at noon on Nov. 21.
Greenville won its last three games.

Division II Indianapolis trails Southern Illinois University's men's basketball team 41-36 at the break.
The Greyhounds (1-0), coached by John A. Logan College Hall of Famer Stan Gouard, got 11 points off the bench from Darius Adams and nine from guard Ryan Sims. UI outrebounded SIU 16-11 and hit 6-of-8 from 3-point range.
Tony Freeman led SIU (1-0) with eight points in the opening half at SIU Arena.

Monday was payday for several law enforcement agencies in Southern Illinois.
Instructors and three sections of students from John A. Logan College criminal justice program presented more than $6,000 in checks to agencies that use canines at the workplace.
Williamson County and Jackson County Sheriff's departments both received two checks for $850 as they each utilize the services of two dogs.
